Wildlove by Stephen R. Clark

Two Canada geese walk the field,

wearing shades of gray and black,

one head down, grazing

on the green and brown,

the other, swiveling head up,

honking, making a racket

that calls attention to all

to stay away, make way,

announcing he is her

protector, guardian of her

life, and will be until death

grounds him back to dust.

A dog barks nearby

as the two lift off and fly

on to another clearing

together.
