Velveteen by Camille Boudreau

You are velveteen, soft and yielding,
the soul your body holds,
Is evergreen

Pain is rust, red dust, all over you
but a nail in the soil turns the hydrangeas blue,
at least that’s what my mother told me
dust sifting in sunlight from the dried petals in our living room

But you are velveteen
soft and yielding
the soul in your body
Is evergreen

Ever young, and old, and small
like the tree that never seems to grow any taller,
like the eyes that glow honeyed amber
ember warmed, stir the coals a little longer, love.

Love. Send me your sigil,
let me mark myself ten times over
let me find the space in your chest
to lay between.

My name is Camille Boudreau. I’m a writer with a degree in English literature with an emphasis in poetry from UCLA. I’m 23 years old and have been a believer since I was very small. However, recently, I’ve felt my relationship with Jesus grow and change into something far more deep and beautiful and my writing has developed along with it.
