Higher Ground by Jake Henson

We, the people of the world, ambitious by design

Are often running straight ahead to an end we can't define

We focus all our efforts on what we feel we must

Without a thought of what remains when we return to dust

Every empire, big or small, will one day be brought low

They all must bow before the light of the fast-approaching glow

Yet still, we build our little thrones, despite their certain fate

We take refuge in our ignorance of their expiration date

But like fish against a mighty current, a remnant still remains

Inching forward toward a prize, enduring aches, and pains

Their buildings cast long shadows on our carefully planted seeds

They try to blot and block out the Sun our hopeful harvest needs

From the world's prevailing point of view, we've fallen far behind

Though the way is hard, our path is sure, and we cannot change our mind

Yes, we're set in constant motion, but this world is upside-down

While everyone is climbing, few are headed for higher ground

Jake Henson is a rootin', tootin' South Texas cowboy by day, poet, and singer/songwriter by night. His day job allows him to see God's creation up close and personal, and how biblical principles truly come to life in nature. God's goodness in the midst of a fallen world is the inspiration for many of Jake's works.
