young Jesus by Jacob Friesenhahn

back beyond we were already still not yet

ripe potency hanging slow round and fresh

sweet indolence innocently victorious

before the battle powerfully unarmed

like young Jesus

before baptism by John

before days and nights spent in the Judean desert

alone with the Devil

before hot salt winds arid with temptation

pricked plump cheeks

Jacob Friesenhahn teaches Religious Studies and Philosophy at Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio. He serves as program head for Theology and Spiritual Action (THSA).
