Wrestling by Stephanie Nygaard

An intruder, knocking at the door,

barred from entering, moves

to the chime, releasing

a string of notes once locked inside.

Entangled,

the intruder and notes fly to the trees and begin

pushing and pulling, cracking

open the rough bark skin,

emancipating a spirit whose wild abandon

matches their own.

They begin wrestling as Jacob wrestled with God.

Will the intruder become victorious?

The string of notes? The spirit?

Or will they all be subdued by

their creator as Jacob was?

As I witness this dance,

I ask God to subdue my own wrestling

and calm the mighty wind

of my mind.
