The Light Between the Trees by Alysia Quinn

you remind me
it is ok
that sometimes
I breathe fire

inhaling complexity
and exhaling intensity

and when the night smolders
from what the flames
left behind
you hold my hand

helping me to settle in
to all of who I am
clearing the ashes
from all the backfires

and when I can’t
see the space
in front of my face
you’re here
and I am not alone

and then the smoke clears
enough for me to look
for the light
between the trees

and I can see
from all that darkness
that I’m burning
a new path
