Once Adrift by Caitlin N. Pate

Out at sea we have drifted, Bound to no land,

The depth too great for anchor. Tempests have risen,

Tossing our ship

Upon wave and gale.

Fog fallen so thick

Neither shore, nor star

Can be seen.

We hold tight to the wheel, Keeping a steady course Against the bull and drag. When suddenly

A light flares,

Harolding shore–

Safety.

The sails billow out, stretching Toward the land

Beyond the beacon.

As we approach

It materializes

Out of the mist:

Land.

A safe port.

Home.
