French Press by Caroline Liberatore

Coffee beans, in grinding and agony
Release the aromatic nod of dawn.
Will you partake in the pressing?

The scalding, the scolding
Flurry of once sedentary grounds
jolted to motion.

The crushing, in disguise, a conversion.

The staining, the straining, uncovering anew:
What the night has weathered,
may the morning heal true.

Oh, let it be full-bodied, this cup of trembling;
let it be an awakening worth sipping.
