Does the turtle feel the
cold of the lake? He is
gliding beneath the glass
and I am watching him
pass, imagining being a
turtle. If I cannot stand
the cold, perhaps I could stay
forever and watch him be one
for me. But I am warm-blooded
in a rented house behind trees like
broken fingers and my gaze will be
drawn away. I’ll go away to break the
peace like his mossy head disturbs the
surface. Maybe the turtle isn’t at
peace. Maybe he feels the cold and
despises the wind-forced ripple. He
has his own away. He prefers a
rented house on a lake, not a cold
diamond wake.
