Lift My Wings by Patricia Orozco

As each part of myself fell completely apart, I couldn’t help but wonder why.

Why the plague of darkness could not be cured, why the depth of my soul was tugged below the pit of my stomach,

why my body trembled in fear.

As I carried the weight of a world that was never meant to be held,

these were the moments in which you made yourself known.

And here, each time I fell thereafter, the caps of my knees never touched the ground again.

How could I say I’m falling when I’m being held in your grasp?

How do I explain to you of love without the touch of rose petals,

without the clasp of fingers interlaced,

how do I explain to you of love with the abundance of forever and the glory of now?

How do I say to you the feeling of fullness without a clench in the jaw…

Complete, breathing without ever running out of air.

To be saved, was to be born--

Was to live as if “tomorrows” were always close by and as if “yesterdays” carried no scars in the courtroom of judgment.

To be known. As a daughter, as a son.

You, as my Father.

To be loved.

In trying to find perfection in my writing, I realized I would never reach “perfect.” I am human. I am Patricia Orozco, an unknown poet who has found the glory of God. A gentleman knocked at my door and I finally answered.
