Heart of Gold by Jake Henson

Though we prepare, there's no defense
For all in this life that fails to make sense
Like a big ol' smile and heart of gold
That never received the chance to grow old

It leaves holes in our souls, tears in our eyes
And hurts in our hearts that can't be disguised
It stuns and silences, humbles and shocks
The hardest goodbye is to the one in the box

Staring at ceilings and shouting at rain
Bouncing between the numbness and pain
Picking up pieces that are washing away
There's no need to speak when there's nothing to say

We long for an answer but can't understand
Why this hourglass has run out of sand
We question and ponder, grieve and mourn
The facade of control is shattered and torn

Only God knows when, but the pain will move on
The same God of all will provide a new dawn
We'll never forget good times built to last
Creating a future to honor the past

When our own winding road has come to an end
What a reunion with family and friends!
And waiting for us with a shining halo
Will be a big ol' smile and heart of gold

Jake Henson is a rootin', tootin' South Texas cowboy by day, poet, and singer/songwriter by night. His day job allows him to see God's creation up close and personal, and how biblical principles truly come to life in nature. God's goodness in the midst of a fallen world is the inspiration for many of Jake's works.
